-- Brussels, Belgium -- March 28, 2001 -- Fabien Octave announces the immediate availability of BeHierarchic
4.2 for public beta testing. Despite that this version is not
a final release yet, it is very stable, fixes bugs and eliminates
various conflicts reported by users using earlier versions of
BeHierarchic.

BeHierarchic 4.2 supports any Macintosh running Mac OS 8.1 to
Mac OS 9.1 and it also runs in Mac OS X compatibility environment.
Highlights of the changes in BeHierarchic 4.2 include:
- various speed improvements.
- corrects a cosmetic problem with Mac OS X compatibility environment.
- corrects a compatibility problem with FaxSTF Pro.
- supports and enhances compatibility with Glidel.
- corrects a system crash happening when accessing a folder containing
thousands of items.

BeHierarchic recently won a 'Silver' MacFixit Toolbox Awards 2000.
Since 1991, this $10 shareware is one of the first Apple menu
enhancer.
BeHierarchic is particularly praised for its fast and neat display
of submenus, grouping and sorting items on the fly and for its
ability to browse more than five levels of submenus. This unique
feature is particularly useful when accessing a special 'desktop'
menu item which holds your disks and all the desktop-related items.

BeHierarchic 4.2 beta 1 release notes
This version beta is time limited until June 15, 2001. All my
public beta versions are time limited to prevent potentially 'dangerous'
version to survive longer than expected !
Of course, I expect to release BeHierarchic 4.2 earlier depending
of bug reports.
This beta can be use by any Macintosh running Mac OS 8.1 to Mac
OS 9.1, inclusive of the compatibility environment ('Classic')under
Mac OS X.
Improvements and bug fixes over 4.1.1:
- Speed improvements.
- Documentation is now built-in and with Balloon Help, it is more
convenient for the new users. I hope it will help me to reduce
customer support time to be able to focus on development.
- Maximum number of recent tracking has been increased from 63 to
255
- Using the Finder, you can now assign custom icons on the BeHierarchic
recent server, recent applications, recent folders, recent items
items of the Apple Menu. Their corresponding folders are in the
"BeHierarchic" folder located in your System's Preferences folder.
- Compatibility with the classic environment under Mac OS X. Ignore
this paragraph if you are not using Classic in Mac OS X.
BeHierarchic submenu appears clipped on Mac OS X. This is no longer
the case.
As you have also experienced, Classic (on Mac OS X Public Beta)
forces the usage of Apple Menu Options :-( But now BeHierarchic
turns it OFF automatically. However, several user use BOTH BeHierarchic
(for the Apple Menu) and Apple Menu Options (for the recent items).
So I can't turn all off automatically, if you don't use Apple
Menu Options at all, open Apple Menu Options control panel and
uncheck 'Remember recently used Items'. If you get a warning BeHierarchic
is not compatible with Apple Menu Options, just ignore it and
turn OFF 'Warning at Startup' in BeHierarchic Control Panel.
- BeHierarchic 4.2 is now compatible with Glidel.
Glidel users should download Glidel 5.1.2 or later.
- Conflict with FaxSTF Pro and the Fax Assistant Menu in the Apple
Menu.
You can now use FaxSTF Pro without changing the load order of
BeHierarchic relative to STFInit.
- DeepLevel can now be turned off. Which may help in case of unresolved
conflicts.
- Trying to display a folder containing more than about 1000 items
crashed the System.
This is no longer the case, however there is a system (QuickDraw)
limit of 1500 items to be displayed in a menu.
If BeHierarchic encounters such folder, it won't be displayed...
I am looking forward to develop an alternative solution in a next
major release.
- When swapping the entire Apple Menu with the Desktop item, you
couldn't open anything from the Apple Menu. It works now as expected.
- BeHierarchic could not display submenus located in the Apple Menu
of applications (e.g Photoshop 6.0) using the new API to attach
a sub menu. This is fixed. (e.g. in Photoshop 6.0, you can access
the About Plugins... sub menu)
- User of 'MagicPowerMenus' from the defunct Magic Software has
to click twice to select a item in the Apple Menu.
The problem is in their code, but I created a very small utility
providing this kind of feature: ClickMenus (in beta test, available
upon request), so you can get rid of MagicPowerMenus to solve
the problem.
- On Mac OS 8.1 only, trying to display a small icon for a file
without creator and type crashed the System.
- On Mac OS 8.1 only, when memory was low, part of the desktop might
not be restored properly after hierarchical menu selection.
