- What's the future of BeHierarchic on Mac OS X
BeHierarchic 4.2 works in the compatibility environment of Mac
OS X.
Apple provide less hooks than in classic Mac OS for developer
of system utilities such as BeHierarchic. As a result, I can't
technically port BeHierarchic as it is on Mac OS X and I don't want to make a quick and dirty hack.
However, I am currently working on something which will give the
same userfriendly features as BeHierarchic on Mac OS X. Wish list
or new ideas are welcome, please sent them to fabien@octave.net
Due to the volume of e-mail, I might not be able to reply personally
to all your messages, but I read them all carefully.
- Is BeHierarchic Mac OS 9.1 compatible?
Yes, BeHierarchic 4.1.1 is Mac OS 9.1 compatible. If you encounter
problems, you might consider trying BeHierarchic 4.2beta and if
problems presists, send me a bug report.
- Is BeHierarchic Mac OS 9 compatible?
Yes, BeHierarchic 4.1.1 is Mac OS 9.0 compatible and support Multi
User login under Mac OS 9.
- There seems to be a limit of 5 subfolders from the apple menu,
I still am unable to access DeepLevel for the menus: it is greyed
out in the control panel.
How do I increase this to an infinite number?
Old version of BeHierarchic wasn't able to display more than 5
levels of subfolders on Mac OS 8.5 and later. Good news, BeHierarchic
4.1 allows you to break this limit on any version of Mac OS up
to and including Mac OS 9.1
If you encounter this problem I suggest you to download and use
BeHierarchic 4.1.1 or BeHierarchic 4.2
- I drop BeHierarchic onto the System Folder and restarted. Now
the Apple Menu is empty. What's going wrong?
You probably forgot to remove another Apple Menu enhancer from
your system. e.g. Apple Menu Options is still active. You need
to remove this conflicting utility or disable its display of submenus
and restart.
Then BeHierarchic will be able to display the entire Apple and
submenus.
- Sometimes, the label color or a custom icon doesn't display as
expected when I just change it in the Finder.
Yes, to speed up menus display, BeHierarchic try, if space is
available, to keep your most often used submenus prebuilt in memory.
Before displaying them, it checks if the modification date of
the corresponding folder has changed. If it has changed, I rebuilt
the menu from the disk.
The problem comes from the fact that the modification date doesn't
change if the Finder modify a custom icon or set the label color.
The correct display will occur later when the prebuilt menus is
by some means (memory reclaim, modification date change, restart,
...) purged from memory.
- How can I read the user manual and documentation files?
Using BeHierarchic 4.2, the user guide is now available directly
from the Help Menu while BeHierarchic Control Panel is open.
In versions 4.0 up to 4.1.1, the file 'UserGuide.html' and 'HowToSortAppleMenu.html'
are in HTML format.
Just open them with any web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape,
...).
In fact you can even use the Apple Help Viewer. If you are using Mac OS 8.5 or later, simply drop the the file
'HowToSortAppleMenu.html' or 'UserManual.html' onto the application
'Help Viewer' located into the 'Apple Help Viewer' in the 'Help'
folder from your system folder to open it.
- When I open the user manual, no pictures are displayed.
If no pictures are displayed, make sure you have a folder called
'media' (which actually contains all my pictures to display) in
the same folder of the .html files
- Whenever I startup I get a dialog box stating that "the version
number of BeHierarchic could not be found, check system".
The message comes from Glidel and it doesn't prevent BeHierarchic
to work as expected.
Recommended compatible versions: BeHierarchic 4.2 and Glidel 5.1.2,
or any newer version of each.
Please check with its author Gilles Berkovitch <gberkovi@imaginet.fr>
- When I open an item from a submenu and then when I want to open
it again, the submenu could not be accessed because BeHierarchic
displays 'Redundant Menu' message. So what's wrong?
This is a conflict with another extensions/control panel.
The one I know causing this is MacCom Center (a modem utility
software). You may try to put BeHierarchic in the extension folder
instead of the Control panel folder, so BeHierarchic will load
first at startup.
If it is not the case, drop me a note.
- I have the serial number, but I can't find a place to type it
in to register BeHierarchic 4.
Open BeHierarchic 4 control panel and select the command 'register' from the 'Edit' menu. A dialog will appear, then Copy/Paste BOTH the user name
and the serial number in the appropriate boxes and click the OK
button.
Your user name should then appear in BeHierarchic control panel
window as a proof of succesful registration.
- I can't register BeHierarchic with my serial number, instead I
get a dialog stating the serial number is invalid.
Actually the serial user alone is not recognized. You have to
use the user name I gave you.
So make sure you Copy/Paste BOTH the user name and the serial
number in the appropriate boxes.
If it still doesn't work then make sure you have at least BeHierarchic
4.01
- I upgrade my computer system and BeHierarchic seems to be no more
registered. What can I do?
You have to reenter your serial number into the appropriate fields
of BeHierarchic Control Panel. Then click on the button 'Check'
to validate them. If you don't remember your serial number, then
drop me a mail, since I keep a database of all my registered user,
I can send it to you again free of charge.
- Just want to know that after registering, do any other functions
become operational or does it just eliminate the shareware notices?
The registration eliminate only the shareware notice.
In fact selling shareware is based on trust, but in practice a
reminder is needed otherwise people forget about the fees :-)
- Can I pay the shareware fees online or by credit cards?
Yes, the credit cards can now be processed online by connecting
to the kagi secure web site at the following address: http://order.kagi.com/?S7L&S
- Can I pay the shareware fee in cash and also do you accept foreign
currencies?
Yes, to save bank costs both side, I accept any cash and any foreign
currencies as soon as the amount is roughly equivalent to USD
10. To find out how much USD 10 makes in any foreign currencies,
please browse OANDA real time currency converter web site (www.oanda.com)
- Can I pay shareware fees with check?
Kagi accept checks, but when this is NOT an US check, their US
bank charges a quite high processing fee, this means less money
for me...
So if you intend to send the folowing checks, please send them
to me (see address below) since I can directly cash them without
any fees.
Yes, I accept checks, make sure it falls into the following category:
French check in FF (Roughly FF 60)
EuroCheck, in Belgian Francs ONLY please. (Roughly BEF 360)
Postal Money Orders in Belgian Francs. (Roughly BEF 360)
Please make the check payable to Fabien OCTAVE.
- Where can I send the shareware fees by snail mail?
You can send any snail mail to:
Fabien OCTAVE
Avenue de l'Aigle 12
B- 1150 Brussels
Belgium
- What is the postal charge of a snail mail from US to Belgium.
Currently (August 1999), airmail charges for a standard letter
from the US to Belgium is one Dollar.
- What do you do with my e-mail address if I give it to you?
I have no intentions to sell or give away the e-mail addresses
and/or addresses of my registered users.
I use the addresses to make public announcements about BeHierarchic
through my own private e-mailing list.

Older Q&A regarding BeHierarchic 3.1
- The 'Manual Set' popup is grayed out and cannot be changed...
Why?
The manual set is grayed on desktop macs. This is a function available
on PowerBook only.
- I have just found my suitcase for BeHierarchic and then I found
that two other programs were included: SuitcaseLauncher and MasterJugglerLauncher
but I don't know what they do.
SuitcaseLauncher is needed ONLY for the users of this product
(aka Suitcase) It is to be able to launch Suitcase from the Apple
Menu. If you don't have Suitcase, you may trash this extra folder
because it is then useless.
The same is true for MasterJuggler.
- When I copy my serial number, the text boxes remain empty as if
I am not registered...
Be sure you clicked on the button 'Check' after copy/paste the
appropriate codes. Then the boxes may be empty, but a small message
is draw to show that it is registered to "YourName".
In fact the boxes remains empty to prevent people to be able to
copy your serial when opening the control panel.
